The Hingham Yacht Club would be holding a USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival on July 13th and 14th this year.

The competition would enable sailors from the ages of eight to eighteen to compete. The organizers feel that such a regatta event will help create a pathway for greater competitions like the Olympics, where only a select group of talented junior sailors get to compete. However, besides offering high level of competition there would also be a lot of fun here.

The club expects about 300 sailors in the youth category to compete, coming from regions like New Jersey and New York as well. The event would stay open for experienced sailors as well as beginners. Registration for the event would be possible till July 12th which can be done at a site opened for the event, costing about $90 for each racer. There would be three different sailboat categories that will race during the day, laser radial, 420 and optimist dinghy. The latter would be a ten foot one person boat that can be sailed by beginners. There would not be any results declared in this division.

As the club organizers state, the main objective of this category of racers is to have fun. For that, there are no results kept in this division. As it is the first introduction for beginners in the world of racing, they will enjoy the experience and safety would remain the utmost priority. There is a comprehensive safety plan drawn up by the club to ensure that nothing untoward happens.

The 420 category on the other hand is a two sail, two person boats while the laser radials are manned by a single person, usually the most experienced of sailors. The club organizers feel that this Junior Olympic event is a great way to measure progress for junior sailors. Kids can become accomplished sailors. The way they can handle boats in extreme weather conditions is impressive as well.
