Afrodite Zegers is not a stranger anymore as far as the big stage is concerned. There was a tremendous pressure during the final race of World Cup Series Miami 2017 presented by Sunbrella. The Zegers along with teammate Anneloes van Veen showed spectacular poise to win the title of Women’s 470.

The Dutch team made an entry in the final race with Eilidh Mclntyre and Sophie Weguelin for the first time in all standings. The other teams were physically present for every spot on the podium when the van Veen and Zegers marked in the lead with Mclntyre and Weguelin close behind. It was not plain sailing!

The race was indeed stressful as per van Veen. The first upwind was seen initially and thereafter the downwind seemed fine. However, on the 2nd upwind, they could not cover well. Van Veen and Zegers waited with a whole lot of patience to grab an opportunity to win. Finally, they were close enough to successfully grab the wind of the British team rolling on the top to get through the final mark in the 1st position. This was one of the best moments experienced by Zegers and Veen.

There were not too many options left and they just did what they had to when they had the opportunity. They sailed the boat in a manner to ensure that they won by giving some bad air to the British. That was the only chance as per Zegers which made them reach to the top position.

Zegers and van Veen were in high spirits when they won the medal in Tokyo 2020 especially after finishing 4th in Rio 2016 by a single point. They learnt a lot from their mistakes and made it to victory this week. The World Cup Series Miami 2017 was concluded with the prize distribution and a closing ceremony, which was held in Coconut Grove, the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami.
